How to Remove Potassium from the Diet
In right condition,the potassium level in blood serum is 3.5~5.5mmo/L.It can balance acid-base level,take part in energy metabolism as well as maintain the normal function of neuromuscular function.Extra potassium is filtered by kidneys.When the kidneys fail to work,extra potassium builds up in body,which can lead to a myriad of problems.Therefore,it is important for the patients with kidney disease to reduce potassium consumption in their diet.
If potassium higher than the normal range,it will cause hyperkalemia and arrhythmia.Also,muscle weakness, diarrhea, chest pain and heart palpitations may occur.
Therefore, the patients with kidney disease should reduce potassium in their daily diet.The sources of potassium mainly include:
1. Fruits:avocados, bananas, dried fruits, honeydew, kiwi, mango, organs, papaya and prune juice.
2. Vegetable:pumpkin,sweet potatoes,dried beans&peas, potatoes, French fries, spinach, artichoke, tomatoes, winter squash.
3. Dairy products:milk, ice cream and yogurt.
How to remove extra potassium from vegetables?
◎Peel the vegetables,cut into small pieces and place in a very large pot of water.
◎Rinse the vegetables and then make the vegetables soak in water at least four hours.
◎After soaking, rinse the vegetables with clean water
◎Limit portion to one serving, usually 1/2 cup.

Besides reducing potassium in their diet, the patients with kidney disease should also limit the amount of protein, sodium and phosphorus.How much they should consume each day depends on their overall condition and kidney damage degree.
