How Much Protein to Consume as A CKD Patient
Protein is necessary nutrient for people. However, the protein waste products can cause stress on kidneys. Therefore, CKD patients are often faced with the dilemma of having to limit protein intake. How much protein to consume as a CKD patient? What are the good sources of protein?
A general diet for CKD patients should be low in protein. However,as the kidney damage degree and overall condition vary from individual to individual, it is better to calculate how much you can consume in your case.
*CKD stage 1-2: 0.8g/kg per body weight/d
*CKD stage 3-5: 0.6g/kg per body weigh/d
For example,if you are in stage 4 CKD and weigh 65kg,you should consume 0.6*65=39g each day.
As vegetable proteins can produce more wastes, it is a wise choice to add more high-quality in your diet. So you should reduce the consumption of vegetable proteins like rice, bean products, oatmeal.High-quality proteins include milk, egg, fish, poultry product and lean meat.
Here are some examples of protein foods and how many ounces of protein they provide.
Beef steak (4 ounces)
Chicken drumstick (2 ounces)
Egg (one = 1 ounce)
Egg whites (two = 1 ounce)
Fish fillet (3 ounces)
Half chicken breast (3 ounces)
Hamburger patty (3 ounces)
Pork chop (3 ounces)
Shrimp (18 to 20 medium = 3 ounces)
Soy burger (2 to 3 ounces)
Another way to estimate protein is using your hand as a guide. The size of the palm of your hand is approximately 3 ounces. The size of your thumb is about 1 ounce.
The above is just some general suggestions on dietary protein consumption for people with CKD.
